Understanding the Right to Food

People have this basic need for food. Human survival instincts dictate that such need is required to be satisfied. The right to proper food and nutrition is a basic human right, which entails that the very existence of hunger is a violation of that right. But all over the world, famine, malnutrition, and starvation are a clear indication that hunger has not been curbed. A lot of people are still suffering; a lot of people are denied their essential right to food, especially now that a food crisis looms and the cost of essentials like grains and bread are rising.

Though people are born with the right to food, and they do not need to do anything to “deserve” it, people still must use their own faculties and employ their own measures to ensure the realization of that right. Government and philanthropic societies may distribute and provide adequate amount of food on an equal measure, but the burden of seeing that the right to food is not violated rests on the people themselves.

As mentioned earlier, the very existence of hunger is a violation of human right. True, but this becomes a sign of an outright violation only if a certain government has done nothing to provide people the means of acquiring food or have willfully entered into arrangements that increased the hunger levels of its populace. Governments are not charged with the task to feed its citizenries, but rather, give them the equal opportunities and resources so that they can feed themselves.
