UK’s Digital Inclusion Champion Promises Broadband for the Needy
The most deprived lot of Britain, nearly six million people, who have no access to broadband at present, is to be placed in the priority list for broadband connections, announced newly appointed Digital Inclusion Champion, Martha Lane Fox.
Ms Fox in her first public speech at the Reboot Britain conference in London expressed that the plans of providing broadband connection for Britain’s poorest lot is based upon prudent deliberation. This become important considering 80% of the Government’s interactions happen with this one fourth of the population, and if they are not included in the digital revolution, it will add to the cost of the Government.
Further, this is not only the correct thing to do, but the State has knowledge of the identities and whereabouts of this one fourth of the population, which makes it a practical proposal, stated Ms Fox.
The release of the government’s Digital Britain report this year was accompanied by the announcement of the role and responsibilities of the Digital Inclusion Champion. Ms Fox has been reportedly making periodic visits to the UK Online Centres and interacting with the first-time broadband users. She has made plans of putting in two days of every week on the inclusion project. The details of the plan and its progress have been made available on her Twitter page at twitter.com/Marthalanefox.
