The Stopping Tell
Watch a few poker players for a while at a game you’re not playing in. See the one chewing gum? What about the one who’s all jumpy shaking his foot leg or bobbing his head to an ipod.
Now watch them stop and bet, and keep watching and if they stay stopped, then guess what they’re doing. If you’ve been paying attention to this poker online player, you’ll have seen a bluff in action.
Too many players have table tendencies that they continue throughout their regular play. But when they’re bluffing, then end up stopping them. It makes perfect sense since they continue these habits until they have to defend themselves. And bluffing is a very defensive move, you’re defending you chips with air or close to it.
Now let’s say you’re playing this player, what do you do when you spot this?
Well, it’s easy, you call with your more marginal hands. You’ve caught them in a bluff and you need to take advantage of the position they’ve given you. Maybe a swift 3bet is in order, or maybe you just call and hit the flop and reraise the cbet. In any event, you’re going to be playing harder against this player since you’re most certain they have a soft hand.
So when you do catch the stopping tell and have a callable or raisable hand, by all means punish the online poker player who hasn’t learned he’s telling on himself.
